One of the youngest riders at the year’s Great Selby Bike Ride raised a massive £2,300 to support four charities in memory of a friend who died of cancer.

Ada Jobling and her father John rode the short route of 25 miles from Barlby High School through Selby, Thorpe Willoughby and Biggin, to Ryther and Cawood and back through Selby to Barlby High School on May 21. She did this ride because one of her friends had died of cancer and she wanted to support the four charities benefitting from the ride which were: St Leonard’s Hospice, The British Heart Foundation, MacMillan and Martin House Hospice. This week, Ada attended a meeting of the Elmet Lions, which organises the ride, with her mum, dad and sister Rowan and brought the bike she rode on with the number 140 which was her number on the day. Hiscox, the company that her dad John works for, match funded the £1,150 Ada raised by herself, making her fundraising efforts a total of £2,300.

Their representative Hannah Szewczyk was also at the meeting to represent Hiscox. Maggie Hartley, president of the Elmet Lions, said: “This is what the Great Selby Bike Ride is for - to bring people together to ride and raise money for our nominated charities. Ada is amazing and we can’t thank her enough. “We also need to say a big ‘thank you’ to the Selby Times, which sponsors the event and allow us to do it annually.” Ada was presented with a certificate of appreciation, a gold cup and medal and a huge cheque to say thank you. Ada will also be opening the Great Selby Bike Ride next year on May 19. Her dad John said: “Ada is looking forward to opening the ride next year, we’ll work on her public speaking and some cycling in the meantime.”
